Your LEC
(Local Energy Community)
Where local energy creates local value
The Future of Energy is Local
What if we lived in a future, where energy users could pay less and renewable generators could earn more, all whilst reducing emissions and creating meaningful community benefit?
It sounds too good to be true...
Local Energy Communities (LECs) make it a reality.
Why LECs work?
Traditional energy systems distribute power across long distances, with much of the associated value flowing away from where it was created.
LECs bring together local organisations to share renewable energy and keep more value, investment and opportunity local.
Host
Provide space. Enable generation. Share the benefits.
Host
Provide space. Enable generation. Share the benefits.
Host participants make available suitable space for renewable energy projects and benefit from lower-cost, stable energy while supporting community investment.
Connect
Connect to local generation. Drive opportunity.
Connect
Connect to local generation. Drive opportunity.
By choosing locally produced renewable energy, Connect participants help create demand for local generation while accessing lower-cost, traceable, clean power.
Community Benefit
Every MWh traded through our platform contributes £2 to your LEC, ensuring the economic value of clean energy is retained and reinvested where it is generated and used.
Grow Together
More connections. More value. More impact.
Grow Together
More connections. More value. More impact.
More participants means more local renewable energy, lower and more predictable energy costs, increased revenue opportunities and greater impact in the communities they serve.
Your LEC. Your Role.
One organisation. Multiple opportunities.
A short, no-obligation assessment helps identify how your organisation can participate, where value can be created and whether you could play more than one role.
Assess

Enable local energy collaboration
Keep more energy value local. Support local energy generators, businesses, farmers and community partners by participating in your Local Energy Community.
Together, you'll be creating lasting economic, environmental and community benefits from local clean energy.
The Norwich Solar System
ConsensusPower is partnering with Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) to deliver the Norwich Solar System. This forward-thinking initiative aims to convert unused business rooftops into solar power producers, playing a significant role in achieving Norwich’s Net-Zero Carbon objectives.

Birmingham Energy Community
Birmingham generated solar is set to transform rooftops into local energy generators. Working in a newly formed partnership with ConsensusPower, Birmingham Colmore and its neighbours want to establish Birmingham's Energy Community - providing businesses with lower-cost, locally sourced, clean energy.

Your questions about LECs
-
Every organisation that joins helps create lasting value within its local community.
Local Energy Communities are designed to keep more of the benefits of energy local. Community members can invest directly in Host projects through community investment and crowdfunding opportunities, helping local people support and benefit from local energy infrastructure.
As energy is traded throughout the community, a contribution of £2/MWh is also directed towards local projects through our partnership with ActionFunder, helping charities, community groups and social initiatives access much-needed funding.
You can read more about how your participation benefits your local community here.
-
Very little.
Our team manages much of the work on your behalf, including obtaining energy data and engaging with relevant stakeholders where appropriate. We'll keep you informed throughout and only involve you at key stages to review findings, discuss opportunities and agree how to move forward.
-
That doesn't necessarily prevent you from participating.
LECs can grow across wider geographic areas and often align with electricity network regions rather than individual towns or cities. During the assessment process, we'll look at opportunities to connect you with the nearest suitable LEC and identify where your organisation could add value.
As the programme expands, some organisations may also become the catalyst for creating a new LEC within their area, helping bring together local generation, demand and investment for the benefit of their wider community.
-
Usually not.
In most cases, there are no upfront costs to join a Local Energy Community.
If you're a Host, community-backed renewable energy projects are fully funded and managed on your behalf. If you're a Connect Participant, you can access locally generated energy through your existing energy procurement arrangements. If you're a Power Partner, we'll work with you to integrate participation alongside your current route-to-market strategy.
In the rare event that our assessment identifies a potential cost, we'll make these fully transparent from the outset, allowing you to weigh the costs against the expected benefits before making any decision.
-
Yes.
Your energy supply remains secure. Local generation forms part of your energy mix and is supplemented by the wider electricity network when required, ensuring your organisation always has access to power.
This means you can benefit from locally generated renewable energy without compromising reliability.
-
Absolutely. Many businesses operate from leased premises and can still participate.
Our Host programme is designed to create value for both landlords and tenants by offering landlords passive income from underutilised roof space while helping tenants access the financial benefits of onsite generation. If hosting generation isn't possible, you can still join as a Connect Participant and benefit from locally produced clean power.
-
Not at all.
You don't need any existing generation assets to participate. Many organisations join as Connect Participants, accessing locally generated power from within their community without hosting any equipment themselves. You’ll still benefit from substantial cost savings while supporting local businesses.
-
Yes. In fact, many organisations start there.
Our team of analysts can assess your site and identify the opportunities available to you. If hosting generation isn't suitable, we'll explain why and help you explore other ways to participate in your Local Energy Community.
-
You may be able to unlock additional value from your existing system.
As a Power Partner, you can sell surplus generation into your Local Energy Community and help power other local organisations while creating greater value from the energy you produce.
